ABOUT OUR APHELANDRA SQUARROSA
Hi there, I’m Floyd the Aphelandra squarrosa. Please call me the Zebra plant or simply Floyd as I know my formal name is a bit complicated. Just one glimpse at my striking leaves and it’s impossible to look away. My Zebra-like stripes really are something special, don’t you think? Although you won’t find me roaming around the Serengeti National park. I'm found in the Atlantic forest that runs through Brazil.
You’ll find me with all the other subtropical plants that love warm temperatures, dappled light and high humidity. I come from a massive family that consists of over 2,500 species but all call the Atlantic forest their home. The Acanthaceae family mainly consists of flowering plants, vining plants, shrubs and succulents. Being from a tropical climate I can be a bit sensitive to the cold and excessive heat. It’s best to keep me away from drafts, open windows and radiators.
Use my foliage as a focal point to decorate a room. My mysterious and fascinating foliage is one of nature's many treasures.
Medium height (including nursery pot) 40-45cm; pot diameter 17cm. (Fits a 17cm pot)

In the late summer the Zebra plant will bloom bright yellow flowers. This happens yearly but only lasts just a week so enjoy them while you can.

THINGS WE ALWAYS GET ASKED
How do you take care of a Zebra plant?
Like most plants native to Brazil, Floyd will prefer warm temperatures, high levels of humidity and filtered water. The perfect temperature for Floyd is 18-25°C. He likes a warm and well lit room. Keep him at least a metre away from a south facing window as the bright light will burn his leaves. It’s good to make sure that the first inch of Floyd’s soil is dry before you water again. Little and often amounts of water is key to avoid any soggy soil. If possible use filtered water as the harsh chemicals found in tap water can cause browning leaves.
Is the Zebra plant easy to grow?
The Zebra plant is a fast growing plant especially from the months of March-September. He will put out lots of growth provided he is in a warm and humid room with lots of filtered light. In the wild he can grow up to 6ft tall but indoors he will reach a maximum height of 2ft
How often do you water the Zebra plant?
The Zebra plant will prefer moist/damp soil. In the summer months they will need regular watering of one-two times a week. This will be less frequent in the winter months.
