ABOUT OUR BIRD NEST FERN

Hi, I’m Chris the Asplenium nidus. I understand that my latin name might be a bit of mouthful so you can call me the bird’s nest fern. My wavy foliage gives me that cool and relaxed vibe that people love so much. Although my leaves might resemble something you might find deep down on the sea bed, I’m actually naturally found clinging onto high trees or in between rocks.

You can find me enjoying the tropical climate of Australia and Asia. I’m happy to grow in all parts of the world providing there’s enough warmth and humidity. In my natural habitat, I get filtered and shady light so it's important to keep me out of any direct sunlight. A bathroom with a frosted window is the ideal place to put me.

Providing you can keep my environment warm and humid, I'm the guy for you. My subtle beauty will add some quirky style into a room that’s in need of some greenery.

Small height (including nursery pot) 20-25cm; pot diameter 12cm. (Fits a 13-15cm pot)

Big height (including nursery pot) 45cm; pot diameter 17cm. (Fits a 17-19cm pot)

DID YOU KNOW?

In aborginal tribes in Malaysia, the bird’s nest fern’s leaves are infused and used to help ease the pain of childbirth.

Place Chris in your bathroom. His foliage will love a well needed trip to the tropics without any of the fuss.

QUICK BIRD NEST FERN PLANT CARE

Chris loves high levels of humidity and moist soil. Never let his soil dry out otherwise you might see some brown leaves.

LIGHTING

I like filtered light but can cope in a room with low lighting conditions.

WATERING

Avoid letting my soil dry out, I like regular watering but I hate soggy soil.

HUMIDITY

I love humidity and should be placed in a bathroom or put near a humidifier.

FERTILISER

You can use a diluted fertiliser every 1-2 months in the growth season. I don’t like being fertilised in the winter months though.

THINGS WE ALWAYS GET ASKED

How do I take care of a bird’s nest fern?

Ferns can be tricky to care for if given too much direct sunlight, placed in a draughty spot or in a dry environment. Chris prefers a medium light and will struggle if placed in a bright room. The bright light will dry out his foliage. Keep Chris away from any radiators, open windows or frequently used doors as Chris will not tolerate a draughty environment. High levels of humidity are crucial to keep Chris’s leaves crispy-free. Place him near a humidifier or in a steamy bathroom.

Where should I place my bird’s nest fern?

You should place Chris in a bathroom where the humidity and temperature levels are high. If your bathroom has no windows, place Chris in a medium lit room next to a humidifier. The high levels of humidity will avoid any crispy brown leaves.

How often should you water a bird’s nest fern?

Chris is a big drinker and prefers his soil to stay moist. Regularly water him every week in the winter and more frequently in the summer months. It’s good to check his soil every 3-4 days to make sure his soil is not drying out. Little and often amounts of water are ideal in keeping his soil moist but not wet.

PLANT STYLING TIPS

Style Chris in a hanging pot suspended over your bathtub for a brief visit to the tropics everyday. If you’re looking to add some colour into your bathroom use one of our metallic clay pots for some vibrance.

Pair Chris with the reflect crystal and wanderlust reed diffuser for the complete relaxation package - ideal for a tranquil evening.
