ABOUT OUR PEAT FREE SANSEVIERIA FERNWOOD

Hello I’m David (named after David Attenborough), I’m well known as one of the 60 species of snake plant and my latin name is sansevieria fernwood. I’m one of the easiest plants to care for and will be happy in a bright, medium or low lit room. Ironically, while I might look like I’d be at home in water, I actually need very little. Hailing from Central Africa, I can go for long periods without having a drink, making me an excellent choice for the forgetful waterer.

What makes me special?

I’m one of the first houseplants at Quirky Plants that has been grown in coconut coir. Most houseplants are grown in sphagnum or peat moss which is harvested from bogs around the world. The destruction of these bogs have contributed to the rise in CO2 that is released into the Earth’s atmosphere. I'm very happy to say that my potting mix is 100% peat-free and is made from the husk of a coconut, bark and wood chippings.

I know one plant can’t change the world but I’m a step in the right direction to becoming much more environmentally conscious and sustainable.

When it’s time to re-pot David use our peat free potting mix. Our mix is 100% coconut coir extracted from the husk of a coconut. Mix in 30-40% of perlite and orchid bark to help with drainage.

LIGHTING

I’m adaptable to all types of lighting. Keep me out of any direct sunlight.

WATERING

I’m very drought tolerant and can go many weeks without water. Let my soil completely dry out before you water me again.

HUMIDITY

I can cope with low humidity but prefer a more humid environment.

FERTILISER

Use the fortifying houseplant fertiliser once a month in the spring and summer to encourage new growth.
